August 26 is National Dog Day, a day to celebrate the dogs that have come into our lives and touched our hearts. This is a day to honor service and therapy dogs, family pets and all the canines that comfort us, provide us safety and offer us unconditional love.
Additionally, National Dog Day is a time to remember the millions of shelter animals; hopeful dogs that go without the love, warmth, security and companionship that our pets know.
National Dog Day is a good time to think about the disadvantaged dogs in local shelters and take steps to help put an end to animal overpopulation. Here are a few things you can do:
- Adopt, don’t shop
- Commit to your pet for the animal’s lifetime
- Get your dog spayed or neutered
- Support your local animal shelter or humane society
While we formally observe the joys of canine companionship on August 26, please be mindful of the homeless dogs that are in need of help every day of the year.
Give your pooch an extra hug today, and think about ways you can help the countless shelter dogs in your community.
